Orthodontics is a special branch of dentistry that deals with the diagnosis, prevention and correction of malpositioned teeth and jaws, and misaligned bite patterns. It also focuses on modifying facial growth, known as dentofacial orthopedics.

All the contemporary treatments like functional jaw orthopedics, fixed mechanotherapy with metal, ceramic braces, Aligners, self-ligating system, lingual braces and orthognathic surgical treatments etc are being provided in Department of orthodontics and dentofacial Orthopedics.

Department of orthodontics is committed to treat a patient with interdisciplinary approach with special focus on cleft lip and palate, periodontal problems and temporomandibular joint problems. Under the guidance of experienced faculty, a combination of theoretical lectures with practical knowledge in clinicals is provided to every student

We train undergraduates to acquire knowledge in performing thorough clinical examination, selection and interpretation of clinical, radiological and other diagnostic information regarding malocclusion.

Objectives

Orthodontics is that specific area of dental practice that has as its responsibility the study and supervision of the growth and the development of the dentition and its related anatomical structures from birth to dental maturity, including all preventive and corrective procedures of dental irregularities requiring the repositioning of teeth by functional or mechanical means to establish normal occlusion and pleasing facial contours.

By the end of undegraduation, students acquire knowledge in removable orthodontic appliances as well as theoretical knowledge in advanced orthodontic treatment procedures so that they will be in a position to refer patients for consultation and specialized orthodontic treatment.

Postgraduates are trained to be competent in the following.-

  1.   Understand about normal growth and development of facial skeleton and dentition and pinpoint aberrations in growth process both dental and skeletal and plan necessary treatment
  2.   Diagnose the various malocclusion categories, Plan and execute preventive orthodontics (space maintainers or space regainers), interceptive orthodontics (habit breaking appliances)
  3.   Diagnose and appropriately treat complex malocclusions including surgical patients, functional appliance therapy and corrective orthodontic procedures with fixed orthodontic appliances.
  4.   Able to motivate and explain to the patient (and parent) about the necessity of treatment.
