Oral medicine specialists are involved in the primary diagnosis and treatment of oral diseases that do not respond to conventional dental or maxillofacial surgical procedures. Radiography is a highly technical field, indispensable to the modern dental practice.

The Department of Oral Medicine and Radiology at Sibar Institute of Dental Sciences efforts to achieve world standards in educating graduate and post graduate students. Emphasis is laid upon the diagnosis and medical management of orofacial disorders, salivary gland pathologies, oromucosal lesions, temporomandibular disorders, oral cancer and pre cancer and expertise training in maxillofacial imaging.

The department is gifted with good clinical material in the form of high patient in flow exhibiting a plethora of maxillofacial pathologies providing a good platform for learning. The department runs a successful postgraduate programme since 2006. Post graduates trained in the department currently occupy high positions in academic and research fronts both nationally and globally. The department boasts of having eminent teaching faculty including visiting international academicians. The department has emerged as a referral unit for the dental care of medically complex patients and as the major diagnostic imaging center in the central Andhra Pradesh region.

Objectives

  1.   The department focuses on the clinical and radiographic diagnosis, treatment planning and medical management of wide spectrum of cases such as odontogenic & non-odontogenic cysts and tumors, mucosal lesions, temporomandibular joint disorders, salivaru gland diseases and lesions and fractures of the oro-facial region.
  2.   Students are acquainted to perform radiological investigations and imageological workup of oral diseases and gain expertise to arrive at a radiological diagnosis.
  3.   The students are trained to diagnose any underlying systemic diseases based on their oral manifestations.
  4.   The department aims at imparting clinical skills in dental management of medically compromised patients.
  5.   The department also plays a key role in Forensic dentistry for identification and age estimation.
  6.   The department is driven with a motto to catch it early and trains the students to be competent to diagnose, prevent & treat early the pre cancerous lesions and Oral Cancer.
  7.   Emphasis is given on ‘Prevention is better than cure’ and thereby we play an expert role in tobacco cessation by alternative management and counseling of the patient.
  8.   The department plays an important role to evaluate patients with complex orofacial pain and providing then medical and palliative care.

Services

  1.   Diagnosis of oral and maxillofacial lesions by a thorough clinical and radiographic examination.
  2.   Diagnosis of various systemic illnesses by their oral manifestations and dental management of medically complex patients
  3.   Salivary gland pathologies are assessed using sialometry, sialographyand managed symptomatically
  4.   Oral cancer and precancerous screening is done using vital staining and biopsy.
  5.   Radiographic services like Intra Oral Periapical radiography, Bitewing, occlusal, Orthopantamograph, Extra oral radiographs and Cone Beam Computed Tomography are provided
  6.   CBCT which is a higher imaging modality is used in analysis of alveolar bone and dentalimplant planning.
  7.   Minor surgical treatment of mucosal lesions like excisions, sclerotherapy, intralesional injections are done.
  8.   Tobacco Cessation Counselling centre motivates, encourages the patients to quit the tobacco habit and helps the patients through their deaddiction process there by reducing the morbidity and mortality induced by tobacco.
  9.   Diagnosis of complex orofacial pain problems and their management which includes psychological help, medication and other physical modalities.
  10.   Age estimation based on age-related changes in the teeth and maxillofacial skeleton and bite mark analysis.
